To clarify:

Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) are short-range tactical ballistic missiles wrongly classified as long-range missiles by several respected media, such as BBC, CNN, and the website of German publication Der Spiegel. It has a reach of 300 km.

The Russian Iskander 9M720/9M723 is a road-mobile short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) with a range of up to 500 km (310 miles).

Ukraine can not bomb Moscow, St. Petersburg, or other Russian cities with ATACAMS. They are beyond the range of these missiles. President Biden did not gave Ukraine the ability to strike deep in Russia.

For a better understanding:

There are four general classifications of ballistic missiles:

  • Short-range ballistic missiles, traveling less than 1,000 kilometers (approximately 620 miles);

  • Medium-range ballistic missiles, traveling between 1,000–3,000 kilometers (approximately 620-1,860 miles);

  • Intermediate-range ballistic missiles, traveling between 3,000–5,500 kilometers (approximately 1,860-3,410 miles); and

  • Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) travel more than 5,500 kilometers
